At a glance
  • Element One signed a letter of intent with France-based Mantle8 to evaluate natural hydrogen opportunities in British Columbia and Alberta.
  • The parties plan to identify and rank targets, pursue land positions and establish a framework for exploration drilling and potential development.
  • The LOI is an early-stage, proposed collaboration and remains subject to definitive agreements and exploration results.

The parties are combining technology with regional execution

Element One Hydrogen & Critical Minerals signed a letter of intent with Mantle8 SAS to evaluate and advance natural hydrogen exploration opportunities in British Columbia and Alberta. Mantle8 is expected to contribute geological modelling, hydrogen-system assessment, prospect generation and subsurface imaging capabilities.

Element One would bring regional exploration, permitting, tenure acquisition, logistics and stakeholder engagement. The proposed structure is intended to move from target generation toward land acquisition, drilling and, if warranted, a definitive joint-venture framework.

Natural hydrogen exploration is still an emerging field

Cornerstone analysis

Unlike manufactured hydrogen, natural hydrogen exploration looks for hydrogen generated and accumulated through geological processes underground. The commercial attraction is obvious if large, replenishing or low-cost resources can be found, but the industry is still proving where economically recoverable accumulations exist.

That makes target quality and subsurface evidence especially important. Geology, migration pathways, trapping, reservoir characteristics and measured gas concentrations all have to align before a prospective area becomes a credible development opportunity.

Western Canada offers geology and operating infrastructure

Cornerstone analysis

British Columbia and Alberta combine extensive energy-sector infrastructure with deep geological datasets and an established service industry. Those advantages can lower the practical friction of evaluating a new subsurface resource concept.

They do not guarantee a discovery. Natural hydrogen exploration remains high-risk, and early geophysical or geochemical indicators need to be confirmed through fieldwork and drilling before resource scale or economics can be assessed.

The LOI is a starting point, not a completed joint venture

The September announcement establishes a framework for the parties to work toward target selection and future exploration. Investors should distinguish that from a definitive joint-venture agreement, a discovery or a development decision.

The next milestones are concrete: named target areas, tenure acquisition, technical survey results, a definitive agreement and an exploration program with drill-ready objectives. Those steps would show whether the collaboration is moving from strategic intent into field execution.

Because the field is young, disclosure quality will be especially important as the work advances. Useful technical updates would identify why a target is considered prospective, what measurements support the interpretation and how the proposed drilling program is designed to test it. Clear separation between geological indicators and confirmed hydrogen discoveries will help investors judge progress without overstating early evidence. A definitive agreement with Mantle8 would be another meaningful step because it would define ownership, funding responsibilities, technology access and decision-making beyond the current LOI stage.
