At a glance
  • The maiden Excalibur program drilled two holes of 515 metres and 464 metres into separate geophysical targets.
  • EXC26-001 showed hydrothermal alteration and pyrite-dominant sulphides through its 515-metre length; EXC26-002 showed silicification and patchy potassic alteration.
  • The observations are visual and qualitative. Metal grades cannot be established until independent assay results are received.

The first drill test has put geology beneath the geophysics

Prospect Ridge Resources reported observations from the first-ever drilling at its Excalibur copper-gold porphyry project in British Columbia’s Babine belt. The company prepared four drill pads and completed two holes in July and August before pausing the program for review.

Hole EXC26-001 reached 515 metres and, according to the company, encountered variably intense hydrothermal alteration and pyrite-dominant disseminated sulphide mineralization along the hole. EXC26-002, collared 948 metres to the northeast, reached 464 metres and included localized silicification in its upper portion followed by patchy potassic alteration lower in the hole.

What the observations do and do not show

The release describes minor chalcopyrite and molybdenite locally in EXC26-001 and trace sulphides in EXC26-002. These are geological observations that can help refine a porphyry model, but they are not assay results and they do not establish copper or gold grades.

Prospect Ridge explicitly cautioned readers that visual core descriptions are qualitative. Half-core samples were sent to ALS Minerals for geochemical analysis, and the company said final assays will be integrated before it announces the next drilling plan.

Why Excalibur remains a multi-target story

Cornerstone analysis

Excalibur covers roughly 28 square kilometres and contains at least 12 magnetic targets, with available chargeability and soil geochemistry supporting several areas. The first campaign tested only two high-priority targets, so the significance of the program extends beyond whether a single hole produces a headline assay.

The useful technical question is whether geochemistry from the completed holes supports the alteration pattern and helps vector toward a more prospective part of the system. Drill casings were left in both holes, which gives the company the option to deepen them if the integrated interpretation supports that decision.

The assay package is the next evidence threshold

Cornerstone analysis

For an early-stage porphyry target, broad alteration can be an encouraging first observation because these systems can have large footprints. But a large footprint and an economic mineralized system are not the same thing. Assay grades, metal zoning, alteration mineralogy and follow-up geometry will determine whether the first program has identified a target worth escalating.

Prospect Ridge has said it will provide assay results and plans for resumed drilling after the laboratory data are received and interpreted. That update should turn the current geological description into a more testable picture of Excalibur’s copper-gold potential.
